Alternative Rainbow Mountain Trek to Palccoyo is one of the popular day tours from Cusco. Unlike the trek to Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain which involves an arduous uphill climb, hiking the Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain is easier. On this full day experience, we will be driving you almost to the summit.
The summit of Palccoyo Rainbow mountain is at 4900 metres above sea level. We will be driving you till 4700 metres. From here, it’s an easy 45 minutes hike up, mostly on plain terrain.
The trek also passes through Snow Forest or Bosque de piedras. Which is worth visiting.
The day trip also takes you to a remote Andean village, Checacupe. Locals here have preserved their traditions.
The village houses a beautiful white washed church and a suspended rope bridge. The bridge resembles the renowned Qeswachaka Bridge. However this was built by Spanish rulers.
Also known as Montana de siete colores, Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain is a part of Ausangate Mountain Range. “Apu” as known by locals, Ausangate is the most sacred peak to locals. It is also the highest in the region. The trek offers you a captivating sight of the snow capped peak.
In order to preserve the ambiance only limited visitors are allowed each day. We operate the trek in small groups.
It is highly recommended to spend a few days in Cusco before the trek to avoid altitude sickness.
Cusco Hotel Transfer
At 0700 AM, we will be picking you up from your hotel within the historic centre of Cusco. We will then drive along the South Valley of Cusco to Checaupe. This is a beautiful Andean village. Here you will have some time to walk around and witness the traditional lifestyle of locals.
The village also houses a beautiful colonial white washed church. The church is mostly closed, but if it is open and if time prevails you can take a tour. There is also a suspended rope bridge. This was built during the Spanish colonial era.
This is the last major village before we will be entering the Andes. So if you want to use rest rooms or buy water and snacks this is the place.
We will then be driving you through a scenic route up the hill. We will be passing through many remote communities on our way. Often the community leader joins us to share their experience.
Once we reach the car park, our guide will be giving you a short briefing. Then we will start hiking to the summit. We will be passing through the stone forest which is a unique sight.
You will have an enchanting sight of Andes and Vilcanota Mountain range from the top. Our guide will also share some information about the sacred Apus Ausangate peak.
Once you have had your fill of this seven colored mountain, we will be hiking back down to the car park. Then we will be driving back on the same route. We will be stopping at a restaurant where we will be serving you lunch.
After lunch, we will be driving you back to Cusco city. We will be dropping you off at Plaza Regocijo, a block away from Plaza De Armas at around 0600 PM.
The easiest way to reach Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain is by taking a guided tour. However, you can take a private bus to Checacupe. From here you will need to find a transport to Palccoyo village which is roughly a 30 minutes drive. From here it is 1 hour to 1. Hours hike up.
The region experiences two types of weather, dry season and wet season. During monsoon the trail gets slippery and is relatively dangerous. The best season is from April to November, dry season.
Was not quite sure if this would be a good option to do as I felt quite sick of the higher altitude. I spoke to Karen and she convinced me for this. Yes, she was right, they took a great care of me. The guide was very friendly and helpful. The hike wasn’t tough as we drove almost to the top. It was nice to see and interact with local people too. Just go with Machu Picchu Peru Cusco, they are the best
My experience with Machu Picchu Peru Cusco was great from start to finish, the whole team always treated us politely, very professional.
Our guide always explained about the place and the best thing is that he cared about our well-being.
