Apu Ausangate Trek is an off the beaten track high altitude trek in the Peruvian Andes. It is one of the most beautiful treks in Peru with entrancing views at every turn. The highlight of the trek in the Sacred Mountain of the Andean people, The Ausangate Mountain ot the Apus.
Although the trek does not take you to Machu Picchu, this offers experiences at the renowned Inca Trail.
Ausangate Mountain is a part of Vilcanota Mountain Range or Cordillera Vilcanota.
It towers to 6372 metres above sea level. The snow capped peak dominates the Southern Skyline of Cusco city on a clear day.
The trek is a lifetime experience to most. You will be feeling so closer to nature than ever before. We will be hiking along some of the untouched wilderness and hot springs of the Peruvian Andes. You will also get to see many Andean farms and get an insight to the life of locals here.
This is a high altitude experience with many high pass over 5000 metres above sea level. It is imperative that you spend at least four days in Cusco before the trek to acclimate and avoid altitude sickness. The highest point of the trek is Palomani pass at 5200 metres above sea level.
Ausangate Mountain is a part of the Andes. It is subject to two seasons, dry season and rainy season. The best time to do Ausangate Trek is during the dry season, between April and November.
Cusco Hotel Transfer

We will be picking you up from your hotel in Cusco early in the morning. We will then embark on a three hours drive along the South Valley of Cusco to Tinqui. This is the starting point of the Ausangate Trek at 3800 metres above sea level.
At Tinqui, we will be having a brief stop to have lunch. After relishing a local meal, we will begin with a gradual uphill hike. This will be an excellent introduction to the beauty and the serenity of the mighty Ausangate and Vilcanota mountain range.
We will continue hiking to Upis. It is an Andean village at 4400 metres above sea level. Upis is also home to hot springs. From here you will be getting a closer look at the Apu Ausangate.
We will be camping in Upis for the night.
One of the beautiful days of the Apu Ausangate Trek. You will be rising up to the serenity of the Peruvian highland. Our crew will set your breakfast.
After breakfast, we will begin the hike up the hill to the first pass of Ausangate Trek, Arapa Pass. It is at 4850 metres above sea level. You will get a captivating view of the valley from the pass.
After resting for a while, we will hike down for three and a half hours to the valley. Along the way, we will be crossing different lagoons. We will be stopping for lunch on the shores of Hatun Q’ocha. It is a beautiful turquoise lake.
We will then hike up to the second pass of Ausangate Trek. Apacheta pass at 4900 metres above sea level. You will get a spectacular view of the sacred peak and the turquoise lake, Ausangate Q’ocha.
The lake gets its name after the mountain as the melting glaciers of Ausangate feed the lake. We will be camping here for the night.
After relishing a typical breakfast, we will be hiking up to the highest point of Ausangate Trek – Palomani Pass at 5200 metres above sea level. We will stop at the pass so you can enjoy the beauty of the Peruvian highland.
We will then hike along a trail through views of Puca Punta and Tres Picos to the green valley of Pampa Jutunpata and onward to Rio Qampa valley where we will be camping for the night.
We will be waking up to the blissful view of the Peruvian Andes. After breakfast, we will be hiking through the Qampa community to the last pass of the Ausangate Trek. Qampa Pass nestles at 5000 metres above sea level.
We will be hiking through different coloured lagoons. For lunch, we will be stopping on the shores of Nina Parayoc.
After lunch, we will be hiking through the highland Andean farmlands. Here you will have the opportunity of spotting the Andean camelids – Alpacas, Llamas and Vicunas. Continuing the trek, we will be reaching a highland Andean village called Pacchanta. It houses a beautiful hot spring where you can take a dip and rejuvenate.
We will be camping here for the night. If you desire for a comfortable stay, you can upgrade to basic hostel rooms here.
Last day of the five day hike in Ausangate. After breakfast, we will be hiking for three hours back to Tinqui. Here we will be meeting the driver for our journey back to Cusco. We will be reaching Cusco by 0300 PM.
