Chonta Cusco Condor Spotting Tour

Chonta Cusco Condor Spotting Tour is quite an unusual full day trip from Cusco. It is best to experience this while you acclimatize in Cusco.

Andean Condors were sacred to Incas. To them, Condors represented Jananpacha. Which in Quechua means sky, the upper world and future.

These condors have a longer lifespan than humans. They spend around 50 years in the wild and some 80 years in captivity. Andean condors are 142 centimetres in height and have a wingspan of 330 cms.

On this full day tour from Cusco, we will also be visiting Killarumiyoq. It is a massive moon stone. This is a lesser known site in the region. Locals here have preserved their age-old Incan tradition of Killa Raymi.

Also known as Killarumiyoq Raymi, it is a traditional Incan festival honoring the moon. Andean priests (Shamans) perform the ceremony on the last Sunday of August every year.

The Chonta Cusco Condor Spotting Tour offers exclusive condor sightings while they are soaring from the Chonta Canyon. On this tour, you will also be able to see the life of locals in the community of Chonta Cusco and see Condors in their natural habitat.

Itinerary

Condor Spotting in Chonta

At 0800 in the morning we will be picking you up from your hotel in Cusco. Then in our private transport, we will be driving you to Killarumiyoq. Here, our local expert will be giving you a guided tour of the sacred rock and surrounding inca sites. You will understand the traditions of Incas which are preserved and practised by locals.

Once you have had your fill of this place, we will drive you to Limatambo. Here we will be stopping for lunch at a local restaurant.

After lunch, we will start hiking for an hour and a half to the Mirador (View Point). Andean Condors fly back at around 0200 PM from hunting. Apart from Condor Sighting, the place is also home to over a 100 distinct species of birds.

We will then hike back to the community of Chonta. Our driver will be picking you up from here for your return trip to Cusco.

Family Traveller

Did this full day tour from Cusco as a family. It was a very nice experience. We saw many Condors and the guide explained their differences. Karen was very accommodating and she certainly went above and beyond in making this a memorable experience.
