Moray Maras & Salt Mines Tour Details

Moray Maras & Salt Mines Tour is one of the popular half day tours in the Sacred Valley of Incas. Unlike the Maras Moray tour on Bike or ATV Tour, this is a much relaxed experience. We highly recommend this tour while you are acclimatizing in Cusco.

Both Archaeological sites of Moray and Salt Mines of Maras played a significant role during Inca civilization.

Moray:

Moray is home to farming terraces. These series of terraces are quite distinct. They are circular shaped terraces which seem like a massive hole dug into the ground.

They have different levels and each level has a different temperature. Infact, there is a difference of 15 degrees celsius from the top to the bottom of the terrace.

To Incas, this was an agricultural laboratory. They tested the growing conditions of crops at different levels to determine the best growth condition at a specific temperature.

This is the reason why Peru now produces over 800 varieties of potatoes.

Maras:

The dusky town of Maras is home to the salineras salt mines. They are beautifully nestled on a side of a hill. These salt terraces are known to have existed since the pre Inca times. Locals here continue to practise the traditional salt farming methods as their ancestors.

There are small aqueducts through which they let in the natural spring water from the nearby hot spring. They then wait for the water to evaporate. It leaves behind crystals of salts which is then manually scrapped out.

The salt of Maras is pinkish in colour and is nutritious. It also has a distinct taste.

You will need to have the Boleto Turistico (tourist ticket) to enter Moray. It costs 70 soles for partial and 130 soles for complete.

However, to enter Moray there is a fee of 10 Soles which is paid to the community.

We also have a full day Sacred Valley Tour which includes Maras and Moray. This is ideal if you want to spend the whole day visiting the iconic sites of the valley.

Itinerary

Maras Moray Half Day Tour

We begin the half day trip by picking you up from your hotel in Cusco at 0800 AM. Then we will be driving you to Maras. The route offers enchanting views of snow capped mountains of Urubamba mountain range.

Once in Maras, our local expert will be giving you a guided tour of the salt mines. Here you will witness how the salt farmers continue to use the traditional method of extracting salt.

In order to prevent contamination, the government has imposed a regulation which restricts visitors from stepping on the salt terrace. Instead you will be able to see it from a nearby view point.

After this, we will drive you to Moray. Here you will be introduced to different farming methods of Incas. You will understand how farming played a significant role in the life of Incas and continue to do even today.

Then we will be driving you back to Cusco.
