Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain Tour Full Day often referred to as the Alternative Rainbow Mountain tour is one of the popular tourist attractions in Cusco. Unlike the full-day tour to Classic Rainbow Mountain or Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain in Peru which involves an arduous uphill climb, hiking the Palccoyo Cusco Rainbow Mountain is easier. On this full-day experience, we will be driving you almost to the summit.
The summit of Palccoyo Rainbow mountain is 4900 meters above sea level. We will be driving you to 4700 meters. From here, it’s an easy 45 minute hike to reach the summit, mostly on plain terrain.
En route to the summit, we will be passing through the Snow Forest (Rock Forest) or Bosque de Piedras. Which is worth visiting.
Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain Tour offers a visit to a remote Andean village, Checacupe. Locals here have preserved their traditions.
The village houses a beautiful white-washed church and a suspended rope bridge. The bridge resembles the renowned Qeswachaka Bridge. However, this was built by Spanish rulers.
Also known as Montana de Siete colores, Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain is a part of the Ausangate Mountain Range. “Apus’ ‘ as known by locals, as Ausangate is the most sacred peak to locals. It is also the highest in the region. The trek offers you a captivating sight of the snow-capped peak.
In order to preserve the ambiance, only limited visitors are allowed each day. We operate the full-day trip in small groups.
This is a high-altitude experience. We highly recommend you spend a few days in Cusco before the trek to avoid altitude sickness. It is ideal to experience Palccoyo Cusco after the tour to Machu Picchu as you will have enough time to acclimatize.
Palccoyo Rainbow Mountains are a part of the Andean Mountain Range. It is subject to two seasons, dry season and rainy season. The best time to visit Palccoyo is during the dry season – March to November.

Your epic Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain Tour Full day begins with a transfer from your hotel in Cusco at 0700 AM. We will embark on a 3.5 hours drive along the South Sacred Valley of Cusco to Checaupe in our private transport.
This is a beautiful Andean village. Here you will have some time to walk around and witness the traditional lifestyle of locals.
The village also houses a beautiful colonial white-washed church. The church is mostly closed, but if it is open and if time prevails you can take a tour. There is also a suspended rope bridge. This was built during the Spanish colonial era.
This is the last major village before we will be entering the Andes. So if you want to use restrooms or buy water and snacks this is the place.
We will then be driving you through a scenic route up the hill. We will be passing through many remote communities on our way. Often the community leader joins us to share their experience.
Once we reach the car park, the tour guide will be giving you a short briefing. Then we will start hiking to the summit. We will be passing through the stone forest which is a unique sight.
You will have a captivating view of the Andes and Vilcanota Mountain range from the top. Our guide will also share some information about the sacred Apus Ausangate peak.
Once you have had your fill of this seven-colored mountain, we will be hiking back down to the car park. Then we will be driving back on the same route. We will be stopping at a restaurant where we will be serving you lunch.
After lunch, we will be driving you back to Cusco city. We will be dropping you off at Plaza Regocijo, a block away from Plaza De Armas at around 06:00 PM.
The easiest way to reach Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain is by taking a guided tour. However, you can take a private bus to Checacupe. From here you will need to find a transport to Palccoyo village which is roughly a 30 minutes drive. From here it is 1 hour to 1. Hours hike up.
The region experiences two types of weather, dry season and wet season. During monsoon the trail gets slippery and is relatively dangerous. The best season is from April to November, dry season.
